Travel behaviour

There is limited work on travel behaviour in Cape Town, Dar es Salaam and Nairobi. A number of studies have been carried out in these three cities, but the data collected in these studies are not readily available, often prove not to be useful for comparative analysis, and often do not include adequate data on non-motorised modes of transport. Nevertheless, these studies typically form the basis for developing transport projects, although the characterisation of travel behaviour is often limited by the focus to collect data mainly to establish demand for road space for motor vehicles on the basis of a trip diary.

This project was formulated to collect and document transport systems and travel patterns data in these three cities in a manner that will address the above shortcomings. The outputs of this project are to be used by other ACET projects as a common background and for refinement of research questions, but, more broadly, will also provide information on general travel patterns and household and personal characteristics influencing travel behaviour in the case cities.

The primary activity of the project is the design and administration of a household travel survey in the case study cities, with a sample size of 1,000 households in each city. The survey is being implemented by a market research firm, and its results will be used to analyse and compare travel behaviour in relation to all trips for all purposes in the case cities, paying particular attention to travel by paratransit and non-motorised modes.
